In recent times (2020-2025), the level of contamination in the kerbside recycling materials has been increasing at an alarming rate. Contaminants such as whole dead sheep, dead roosters, asbestos sheets, mowed lawn clippings, powdered cement dust among others are found in recycling waste.
On average the amount of contamination in recycling can be up to about 30% of total material in the recycling bins.According to NSWLG Resource Recovery report, contamination rates in recycling is on average of 14% across Australia (National Waste Report 2022).
The Kerbside Recycling Contamination Policy has been reviewed and updated to establish the process of enforcing recycle bin standards in the Uralla LGA.
The draft policy will be on exhibition for 28 days. We welcome your feedback and encourage you to review the document and share your thoughts.
